The Russia's position on climate, as has already been announced before the conference, suggests readiness to sign a uniform and legally binding agreement that will reduce the amount of carbon emissions.
Russian president Vladimir Putin also outlined plans for financial assistance to developing countries in the climate issue. Russia has supported first four projects in Central Asia and one in Belorussia under the Russian UNDP Fund.
Most experts positively evaluated the president's speech, saying that Vladimir Putin has repeatedly stressed the importance of the climate change issue. Ten years ago, the country was very skeptical about this problem, but because of the policies and actions taken in recent years, Russia has moved from skeptics to active participants in the fight against global warming and carbon emissions.
According to the Russian climate commitments, the volume of greenhouse gas emissions should be reduced by 25-30% of 1990 level by 2030, taking into account the absorption capacity of Russian boreal forests. This will contribute to the development of low-carbon economy in the country.
