Russia and China will jointly reduce carbon emissions

Prime Minister Arkady Dvorkovich and Deputy Chairman of the State Council Zhang Gaoli jointly chaired the 12th meeting of the Intergovernmental Russian -Chinese commission on energy cooperation.

At the meeting the parties discussed gas supplies of the "Yamal LNG" eastern direction, the construction of "Silk Road" highway, cooperation in the oil and coal fields, electric power and energy efficiency. In particular, the projects implemented in Russia to boost cheaper electricity with Chinese technology.

According to Arkady Dvorkovich statements after the meeting, the Commission also considered the reduction of coal supplies of and its quality control due to lowering demand. The Commission plans to launch a working group on energy efficiency in the nearest feauture.

Currently there is a significant decline in demand in the coal market due to the development of clean technologies and renewable energy sources, as coal-fired power becomes less effective.

Reduction of coal supplies of together with the Russian companies’ investments in the renewable energy sources and the gradual transition to green energy will help countries to reduce emissions of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere.

According to the Russian climate commitments, the volume of greenhouse gas emissions should be reduced by 25-30% of 1990 level by 2030, taking into account the absorption capacity of Russian boreal forests. This will contribute to the development of low-carbon economy in the country.
