According to the World Resources Institute report, Russia stands first in the international list of forest loss volumes (4.319 million hectares of forest loss annually). However, Russian experts say that the reasons for such statistics are very simple - Russia has the largest forest areas in the world - 809 million hectares and that is why in absolute terms it will always be among the top countries in different ranks.

The study says that 70% of forests are destroyed by wild fires, what causes greenhouse gases emission. The experts insist that the document does not consider measures taken to restore the forests.
According to the Federal Forestry Agency, within the period from 2011 to 2013 a total forest loss was 3.4 million hectares. More than 2.9 million hectares have been restored and planting works have been carried out on the area of 2.3 million hectares. In addition, there was the increase of the forest area of on lands of other categories due to their withdrawal from economic circulation.
According to the global forest resources assessment, by UN Food and Agricultural Organization, the area of Russian forests has been increasing since 1947 and the forest area in Russia remains balanced.
